Suggest at least 6 weeks orientation with shadowed /supported clinics ...as such a big leap from Hospital (unless previous experience) this is what I would do ... Next step...sit down and discuss plan her/his goals /expectations /impressions...evaluate what gaps need filling in PN team etc/ meanwhile set up training for bloods/wound care /treatment room and injections/baby ims first year then smear course, then one of the following CDM diplomas IHD/asthma diabetes /copd 2nd year Travel if iappropriate and all again depending on nurses prior experience...

Our recently new to practice nurse started with bloods, bp, baby imms, smears, smoking cessation, new pt checks and is gradually increasing her treatment room skills. Starting with the simple tasks increased her confidence and competence in consulting, note keeping and allowed her to become comfortable working on a one to one with pts.

Why not enrol your new nurse on a Fundamentals of Practice Nurse course or similar. Remember it takes 12M for GP reg training so why should we expect GPN to get everything in a few weeks. Some training have national minimum standards expectation so you will need to find local course. I think the last thing should be 'Child Imms', seems to be the job the new nurses get first, this is now so complex. Remember allow time for observation, supervision and observed practice, good mentor support, regular meeting and making sure all staff no not to overload/overwhelm your newby!
